When you and your horse work on this exercise consistently over a period of time, you will find that you both will acquire a better appreciation of staying laterally centered with minimal aids and no conflicting signals. I have seen this exercise demonstrated on my dad (you will meet him in chapter 9—p. 131), and he can do a canter pirouette either way while our trainer looks pretty relaxed during the whole thing. Her aids are now so subtle and refined that I can’t see which side she is using or the side she is relaxing.

I am pretty sure some exercises are invented because riders need or want something specific from their horses, and they need a way to build skills and understanding in order to achieve their goal. It is a good thing because I think many of us horses deal with specific stiffness and crookedness issues. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your horse and see if you can fix his problem with exercises you develop just for him, with his issue or issues in mind. (I will give you one hint: It is often good to incorporate shoulder-fore, and forward-and-back rideability within the gait, to any exercise you might create.)

Our Second Level journey together is at its end. I think I will stay here a bit longer and continue practicing these movements because I am not nearly good enough at any of them yet!
